Camp Pendleton Volunteer Opportunity 10/23

To my fellow FPA San Diego members,

We are looking for additional volunteers to provide one-on-one counseling to active-duty Marines in 1st Maintenance Battalion during an upcoming event at Camp Pendleton from 9 am to 11:30 am on October 23rd.

This event is again being conducted as a joint effort between the San Diego FPA and the Financial Independence Training program led by David Block. David and others have been working hard for about five years on developing the F.I.T. program, and these events are one of the ways in which that work is starting to bear fruit in our efforts to improve personal financial education among local members of the military. We can't do this work without volunteers, your help is both needed and greatly appreciated!

Our volunteers have now helped to provide individual financial counseling to over 1000 service members during previous events at Camp Pendleton and MCAS Miramar, and many of them left exceptionally positive feedback about their experience and the help they received.

Based on attendance estimates from the unit we're supporting, we expect to need about 18-20 volunteers for this event.

We'll have enough time for each volunteer to have about 4-5 meetings with Marines, of about 30 minutes each. Volunteers should plan on arriving to the Las Pulgas Rd gate by about 8:30 in order to ensure that they'll be able to get through to the meeting location and set up their table on time.

Please note that it is ok if you do not have much direct experience with military financial matters. Some potential volunteers in the past have been concerned that they don't know much about military pay/benefits, SGLI, deployments, or other issues specific to the military. Most of the Marines needing counseling will be there for basic financial issues that you are all very well qualified to assist with. However, please be assured that there will be ample help available on site if there is a military-specific question that you don't know how to answer. Let me know if you'd like me to send you some educational resources about military/veterans benefits beforehand.

There is no longer a requirement that volunteers be CFPs. However, all volunteers will have to agree to the CFP Board's Code of Ethics and will be asked to sign an agreement that you're there to provide financial advice on a pro-bono basis only, not to solicit business or advertise your services. You are also welcome to pass this message along to any of your coworkers or colleagues who might be a good fit to volunteer.

If you are available for a few hours on October 23rd and would like to volunteer, please respond to this email or call Steven Fox at (760) 683-4666. If you've already RSVP'd for this event after hearing about it through another channel, then there's no need to do so again.

If you do not already have access to the base, please send me your drivers license number and date of birth so that I can add you to the base access list. Please also let me know if you are interested in carpooling up to Camp Pendleton with another volunteer, and I’ll do my best to connect people together.

I'll send all registered volunteers a reminder with detailed driving directions a few days before the event once the unit we're supporting has confirmed the location.

Please check out the FIT website at http://fit-inc.org for more information about the organization as well as http://fit-inc.org/courses/car/ for an example of some of the training that we're developing.

Thanks!
