Our next event will be held on February 23rd from 9 to 11:30 am in Building 5305 ("The Hub") aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. This event is again being conducted as a joint effort between the San Diego FPA and the Financial Independence Training program led by David Block. David and others have been working hard for about four years on developing the F.I.T. program, and these events are one of the ways in which that work is starting to bear fruit in our efforts to improve personal financial education among local members of the military. We can't do this work without volunteers, your help is both needed and greatly appreciated!
During our last event at Camp Pendleton in July, our volunteers helped to provide individual financial counseling to about 125 service members, and many of them left exceptionally positive feedback about their experience and the help they received. For this next one, the leaders of the Marine units we’re working with have estimated that they will be bringing in approximately 100 Marines so we expect to need about 20 volunteers.
We'll have enough time for each volunteer to have about 5 meetings with Marines, of about 30 minutes each. Volunteers should plan on arriving by about 8:30 in order to ensure that they'll be able to get through to the meeting location and set up their table on time.
Please note that it is ok if you do not have much direct experience with military financial matters. Some potential volunteers in the past have been concerned that they don't know much about military pay/benefits, SGLI, deployments, or other issues specific to the military. Most of the Marines needing counseling will be there for basic financial issues that you are all very well qualified to assist with. However, please be assured that there will be ample help available on site if there is a military-specific question that you don't know how to answer. The attached documents and the videos linked to below will give you a good starting point to familiarize yourself.
There is no longer a requirement that volunteers be CFPs, but they will have to agree to the CFP Board's Code of Ethics and will be asked to sign an agreement that they are there to provide financial advice on a pro-bono basis only, not to solicit business or advertise their services.
If you are available for a few hours on February 23rd and would like to volunteer, please call Steven Fox at (760) 683-4666.
If you do not already have access to the base, be sure to send your vehicle make/model and license plate number so that we can get you through the gate. If you have previously sent me your vehicle info then I don’t need you to send it again, please just confirm that you’ll be joining us again.
I'll send all registered volunteers a reminder with detailed driving directions a few days before the event.
Please check out the FIT website at http://fit-inc.org for more information about the organization as well as http://fit-inc.org/courses/car/ for an example of some of the training that we're developing.
We'll also be at Camp Pendleton sometime during the second half of March, I'll send out the exact date and location as soon as they become available.
One additional note: For those of you who have volunteered at past events, please let me know if you have any great anecdotes about the Marines whom you have helped. A brief summary of the benefits that they received from talking to you or the positive feedback they provided will be very helpful to us as we apply for additional grants to help support our efforts.
